Author's prayer: Lord, please protect those living in Syria tonight.
They always come at night and they always bang loudly on the doors. It's the third night I have been awakened like this. Young men clumsily banging about, rushing up and down stairs and bullets flying outside the windows; all orchestrated at 2AM.
I am 95 years old and a veteran of the wars against our French occupiers. I need my sleep and I am sick of showing my papers to imprudent young men.
Tonight I sleep with my apartment door open. Allahu Akbar; may I be here in the morning.
