See Jules loses His Officers Candidacy
The Italian Merchant was having trouble understanding the big French Soldier. The merchant spoke some French and his French was getting better quickly because Napoleon's French army was moving through this part of Italy.
The Big Frenchman was actually Spanish, a basque, but he was a French soldier in Napoleon's army. He was being very patient with the Merchant because he wanted the toy sword that was in front of him for sale for his son back home. The soldier was pressed for time, they were marching soon, and there was no time to look for his friend Jules who spoke a little Italian.
The merchant was very pleased with himself for he had sold the soldier the toy sword for five times the normal price. Later the merchant would sardonically laugh about that transaction for tomorrow his entire inventory would be stolen or rather appropriated by the hangers on and followers of Napoleon's army in 1796.
