we the abject, we the shunned; it's all a might uncanny

fiction
edward w pritchard

The other originally summoned becomes the abject. The subject of iconoclastic horror and destruction.

Push a ladder against the wall of the church and use a sharp knife to scrape the painting off the face of the offending representation.

Cling now to the delusion of immortality. The unclean object has been cast off.

We the abject, we the shunned; it's all a might uncanny. Faceless representations crowding the walls of silent empty lifeless cathedrals.

clairvoyant

clairvoyant

fiction
edward w pritchard

Please see previous post [ printed below] on peace between the Muslims in the middle east and the West. Notice author's comments on the Country of Turkey. These comments were made Nov 23 early in the AM in Ohio.

Later, the next day of November 24,  Turkish forces destroyed a Russian jet fighter supporting rebel opponents of President Assad, an ally of Russia over Turkish airspace. Turkey supports the " rebels'', opponents of President Assad.

The downing of a Russian jet by Turkey a member of Nato is sure to escalate tensions in Syria and the Muslim Middle East. A return to the cold war perhaps.

Was author clairvoyant concerning the importance of Turkey in the conflict?  Or are there too many Countries with advanced weapons crowding into too small a space?

peace and toleration for Muslims and the West starts in Istanbul, Turkey

peace and toleration for Muslims and the West starts in Istanbul, Turkey

fiction
edward w pritchard

First the ideas, then the artists, then the religious men, then the politicians, then the soldiers, then simple day to day life for the ordinary people.

Peace and toleration for Muslims and the West starts in Istanbul, Turkey. Include the Country of Turkey in discussions and plans of how to reconcile Muslims and the secular Western world.

Perhaps the Pope in Rome should reach out to the Eastern Orthodox church. Perhaps Byzantine Art should be studied in America and Europe as a conduit to understanding the Muslim world.

Ideas and the irrational thoughts in the minds of Men sometimes matter as much as mundane thoughts and plans of business and bargaining.

The religious urge is a powerful motivation that influences History as much the secular concerns of the acquiring and accumulation of material goods.

Include religious leaders at highest levels of negotiation of Statesmanship.

President Obama talks with General George Marshall, deceased, fellow peace prize winner

President Obama talks with General George Marshall, deceased, fellow peace prize winner

fiction
edward w pritchard

As regular readers of this blog will know, few they be, this author has the ability to summon famous deceased persons from the past when appropriate. This time General George Marshall has come to talk with our President Obama. Both men have won a Nobel peace prize and both would seem at first glance an unlikely recipient. Their conversation is summarized below:

President Obama- I know you were in charge of the US military when Pearl Harbor occurred.

George Marshall-It always starts with that. Just wait, just wait; you will see

President Obama -sorry, you won the peace prize

George Marshall-yes, for my plan to revitalize Europe after 1946

President Obama- a forward piece of thinking

George Marshall- that's why I am here, forward thinking, If I may: what do you hope to accomplish in three active wars?

President Obama- It's very complicated

George Marshall- I know, from experience: German aggression, WW2, then China goes communist, I presided over many complex military situations myself, under several Presidents. But I always took the long term view, it's a military habit to look at getting into things with the end in mind. The American people have a short attention span for foreign wars.

President Obama- tell me about Communist China

George Marshall- first don't get me wrong, I wanted anything but communism in China. But I disagreed with my boss President Truman that we should send hundreds of American advisers to counsel the followers of Chiang against Mao. Believe me Truman was not easy to disagree with. But I sincerely believed in 1947 and 1948 that we couldn't stop the changes occurring in China without paying an unacceptable cost to America. I had to think beyond solving the immediate problem facing us, and to think long term, in my Countries best interests and against my feelings.

President Obama- What are you trying to say to me?

George 5th Hotel Paris

George 5th Hotel Paris

fiction
edward w pritchard

I can't remember my conversation at breakfast there at the George 5th Hotel in Paris, France, I can only remember the utter civility of one of Europe's finest hotels. There was a group of lithe Parisian fashion models walking the runway routine there in the restaurant with the Versailles like Hall of mirrors floor to ceiling windows along the narrow golden walls and plush carpeted floors displaying the latest haute couture for the lady tourists. One of whom I sat with eating a light meal. Every table had fresh cut purple flowers in a crystal vase and the chair cushions sunk a foot when you sat down. Your waiter was a man of culture and conversations in the entire Hotel were subdued and civilized.

Paris is so enlightened. So understated, so Romantic, so artsy and such a classical City. Perhaps the premier City in the World.

Why would anyone want to instigate a terrorist attack in Paris?

I wanted to stay at the George 5th because the Beatles had stayed there and they spoke English there. I wasn't rich or decadent. I only wanted the see the Art museums. But myself usually so undemonstrative, Paris stole my Heart.

Now I'll never get back. What a terrible thing to hear, Someone instigated a terrorist attack in Paris, France.

more protests on the college Campuses, circa Nov. 2015

more protests on the college Campuses, circa Nov. 2015

fiction
edward w pritchard

Students are protesting again. Yawn.

Advice to students; don't claim to be an anarchist- call yourself a libertarian.

Stay away from alcohol [ see Eugene O' Neil's "Iceman Cometh" Hickey as the personification of Alcoholism.

Women of college age, don't major in feminism, avoid discussions of free love with male professors
and by all means attend classes regularly.

Men, get some work experience, major in something that interests you and get some work experience

Professors, you work for the college, you are part of the establishment.

Football players on scholarships and other athletes, get some advice on life from an older persons you trust

alumni- move on

the cost of College- invest wisely

on line college students- click here for solidarity-a [$25. 00 fee will apply]

student loans- confusing really, see below

bottom line- look into the future and then decide what to major in, consider such factors as job demand in Asia, your personal health, probable retirement date and lifespan, marriage and family situation and your nature, personality and philosophically if persons really have a " self" and if it matters in a capitalistic society, also consider stock prices 20 years hence, the cost of capital and inflation.

rust unseen, rest unheralded

rust unseen, rest unheralded

fiction
edward w pritchard

It's just a matter of time with a dreamer.

The idee fixee will be miraculously discovered, the famous and powerful will journey from the Palace in the Mountains to the humble rural farm desperate finally to receive the vital information that will right the secret malady sinking the Country and damning the present generation to repeat the gross vices of the lost past. Societies eternal Homage granting Pagan immortality to another conceited self aggrandizing Dreamer.

The dreamer unable to summon the Will to plan, unable to present and market big ideas, unable to connect with the doers, the people of action not intellectual fantasizers rests unseen. Rusting unheralded alone with his thoughts, plans and mild delusions. Reading forgotten books and incorporating ideas from the great minds of the past into his own philosophy and stealing as his own ideas themes like this one in these paragraphs stolen from American philosopher Emerson.

Judge kindly the unheralded dreamer. On balance he harms no one but himself gradually over time learning to see things as they really are. Like everyone else he must come to learn certain things about himself.

That's about all there is to it really.

the free market strikes it's cruel fist again

the free market strikes it's cruel fist again

fiction
edward w pritchard

Author has been following American industrial paper producer Verso Paper [ VRSZ] for several years and notices the stock is today at 4 cents a share and the company again is laying off unionized workers and threatening to close several more mills.

Company assures displaced workers to deal with things you can control such as safety at the local plants and [ author's interpretation] "let the free market sort out the rest".

It's the usual story concerning lost jobs, New York hedge funds arranging leveraged buyout, promises and promises to local Governments and regulators, and then ultimately idle Mills and Factories.

Americans infatuation with the free market strikes again abet on a small scale in a few small towns losing a Mill and local jobs. Insignificant to some in the cosmic significance of market dislocations.

Author studied American History in college and recalls that it was America politicians in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century who resisted European economist's calls for Free Trade. American instead choosing to protect it's fledgling manufacturing companies with tariffs and other protections. Such measures now terribly out of fashion and so politically incorrect.

The fall of Verso paper more than likely has something to do with the internet and new technologies but a fall in stock price in eighteen months from five dollars a share to four cents is somewhat starting to one not trained in classical economics.

Stay tuned for a bankruptcy filing soon from Verso paper. What must the bankruptcy trustee think when he reviews the paper work on these type of deals?

The free market strikes its cruel fist again.

self aggrandizement from afar

self aggrandizement from afar

fiction
edward w pritchard

Traveling from Rockville, Maryland to the mall in Washington DC last month to view the National Art Gallery, author was the only passenger during the twenty minute subway ride who was willing to, and could be observed to give up his seat to an elderly rather in-firmed Chinese lady who was about to be forced to stand during the remainder of her morning commute to DC. The lady as she thanked author mentioned she had fallen twice before on said subway it often starting and stopping quickly with violent jerks. Another much younger American woman who observed Author's actions "blessed said author on behalf of humanity", -that was nice- and author felt good inside for several days over his action.

What has happened to civility toward women, children and the elderly?

Author has often read of up to four thousand persons a year in Mumbai, India being killed or injured due to extreme over crowding in their rush hour train commutes.

Perhaps subconsciously Author gave up his subway seat in Washington DC in silent tribute to the weakened in Mumbai who are forced to ride an extremely over crowded train each morning to facilitate survival in a hostile world. Sitting here in Akron, Ohio self aggrandizing himself from afar for his good deed in DC last month author also mentions he is supposed to have a severe heart problem according to some Doctors although simultaneously said author is spending much daily effort exercising to build strong legs and bones. It was a potential sacrifice to stand on a bouncing subway car whether in America, or Mumbai, India.

Some have recently accused author of being lacking in some of the requirements for success in civil  society. Yet  author does not strike women under any circumstances, is kind and deferential to the elderly and children, and would never initiate a terrorist act against innocent persons in a theater in Paris, France or elsewhere.

Author implores Men of the World to be kind to Women, children and the weak in society. Give up your seat on the trip through life when you can. It's simple justice.

A little self aggrandizement here to himself from your humble author, excuse it if you may.

As for those of you who practice the self centered philosophies of Nietzsche or Ann Rand, and you know who you are, toward the practice of charity and kindness and instead secretly worship Power and worldly success  to make yourself feel important?

To Hell with you all. In good time. Repent ye sinners before it is too late. Blessed are the meek for they shall see God.

wind beneath the wings no longer bloweth

wind beneath the wings no longer bloweth

fiction
edward w pritchard

Lower the lake,
contemplate drowning
Dredge away the past,
float on the flotsam

Jack up the house,
men are here to move it away
Burn baby pictures,
thief stoleth mine heart

Smile at the pretty Judge,
signed papers under duress
Time stamped misery,
tomorrow is a long time gone

Rev up the engine of the barge,
passengers mumbling confession
unhitch the life preserver,
slip under the blackened brine

Forget me misery,
spent Holidays alone
Repossess partiality,
the lease is expired, the mortgage is in default

good life over,
moral value bankrupt
past relative,
future not contractual

live for today,
past another Country
wind beneath the wings no longer bloweth,
stillness interminable, perpetual silence

less than death, more than living,
mumble the incantations
public record sealed, covenant broken,
spin twice, kneel in circle alone

glance across lifeless universe,
espy a vanished face
galaxies rushing apart
winds between jangling forgotten melody.

Donald Trump, too much of nothing

Donald Trump, too much of nothing

fiction
edward w pritchard

Most of us have long since come to grip with our lack of abundance. Mediocre on the basketball court, average grades in school, girlfriend too plump after a brief period of youthful beauty. It doesn't take most Americans long to learn the crazy walk of kow-towing backward in our relationship with money and wealth as we exit slowly backwards at the ends of our lives. We sink unseen solidly into our mediocrity.

What if you were THE Donald and the good Lord was about to bless you beyond your craziest dreams and make you the President of the most powerful empire in History. It could be an unsettling and humbling experience. Ask President Obama; maybe Presidental hopeful Trump should talk to President Obama about what it's going to be like to be in charge and responsible.

Perhaps there is a grand purpose to things after all and at this point and place in History Donald Trump is being chosen to be our next President. He cannot refuse the Honor and no one can change what is soon to be manifest. The man who made making piles and heaps of money look so easy to the rest of us is about to inherit the insurmountable responsibility of no longer just being  able to complain and fuss about the mess the Country is in but instead of becoming the one person charged with spending the next four years being responsible for untangling the ten million broken institutions that are our National Government.

No matter how high one goes he sit-ith on his Ass. You can't make this stuff up. Our Country is about to get a new Caesar.  The cosmic slot machine is spinning and if the wheels of fate line up properly there will be one less very successful bargainer on Main street and a new nervous worry-er living in the big white house on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Pray for our leaders. Politics is important stuff no matter how easy and glamorous the job looks in the movies. As for the rest of us? Be content with the role the Lord has assigned to you, no matter how humble it may be. Be fearful less you get everything you ever dreamed of and then some.

All that glitters is not Gold.

Four tarantulas, a woman kept in an underground cage, a dead deputy and the laughing boy/ part 2 continued

Four tarantulas, a woman kept in an underground cage, a dead deputy and the laughing boy

fiction
edward w pritchard

They kept whistling boy strapped to oak crate boards, facing the large fire and when the tourists came up the hill from the restaurant someone would rattle a stick against the bars of the top of the underground cage that the ship Captain's wife had been imprisoned in these last five months.

The ship Captain's wife had become crazy in her long captivity; the woman would clean and clean the musty underground burrow. The woman caught the earth worms that moved through the walls of her temporary home and placed them in a bucket hooked and attached by wire to the top of her cage. Each morning very early the fisherman gathered up the worms and at night after a long day at sea the men from the boats would leave a whitefish or a tuna for the captain's wife to supply her with nourishment for the day.

When whistling boy heard the stick scraping and rattling on the iron bars of the ship captain's wife's cage he would become violent and rock back and forth explosively foaming at the mouth until whoever was scraping the bars would bring the stick over and whistling boy would try to bite it in half. The tourists always would applaud loudly at Whistling boy's agitation and some of the rich tourists would throw silver coins to commemorate the spectacle.
end part 1
part 2 continued
Juan woke very early with a start. The strong sustained winds overhead were battering the hut he slept in causing Juan to pull the thin tattered blanket over his face for protection and warmth and for a moment Juan was with his ancestors again, a small mammal hiding in an underground burrow fearful of predators and life ending meteorites.
A few minutes latter Juan lead the two powerful horses pulling the heavy bunches of bananas he had stolen up the  sloping hill toward the seashore where the tourist restaurant and bars were. Juan would make a good profit on the bananas. Out of habit Juan tore off a few of the ripest bananas for the crazy ship captain's wife who slept on the soft dirt in her underground cage.
Juan felt the laughing boys eyes watching himself  as he slipped the bananas through the bars of the ship Captain's wife's cage. Juan crossed  himself instinctively for laughing boy was powerful medicine having been rumored to be the lost son of the President of  Nicaragua. Out of respect Juan tossed a banana to laughing boy but could not hear laughing boys thank you because of the strong winds.
The old one eyed cook at the tourist restaurant had paid Juan a good price for the bananas for bananas were expensive now because there was much pilfering of bananas from the Company owed trees by the natives of the Island.
Juan clutched his pocket where the money from the sale of the bananas was as he struggled to keep up with the noisy perspiring horses. Soon Juan would be home and would give the horses extra grain to eat for their share of the large profit from the sale of the stolen bananas.
As he ran Juan thought of the ship Captain's wife. How long had she been imprisoned in the underground cage?
Someone should release the ship Captain's wife.  No, the tourists might complain and as the Deputy said without the tourists there would be no tourist restaurants and no one to buy the ripe bananas and Juan and those like him would be without work.
The winds aloft were strong this morning and Juan felt small as he ran along the road back to his hut to open the large can containing grain that he would scoop out generously for the horses. One must be careful when opening the can containing the grain. Once four tarantulas had been found feasting on grain kept in a large sealed silver container containing grain for the horses. At least so said the Deputy.

it's just football; don't let the coach or players get too much in the news

fiction
edward w pritchard

It's just football; don't let the coach or players too get too much in the news. The world is too much with us late and soon sayeth the poet. Author has heard enough about problems involving football for now and has decided to go back to worrying about an enormous streaking pulsating meteor from space striking the planet and ending higher forms of life and reorienting the local landscape.

Here's what I wrote before about football coaches:

Coach Williams was once a surveillance pilot in Viet Nam. One thing Coach learned as a pilot that served him well as a Football Coach was a football coach must ignore the scenery. Coach Williams was never caught on National camera gawking at the petite Japanese Cheerleader doing acrobatic maneuvers at the college where he coached. Not once was coach embarrassed at a  New  Years Bowl game for staring at the Cheerleaders. While working Coach stuck to business; what Coach did in Private is not known.

publish or perish

publish or perish

fiction
edward w pritchard

What if  University Professors to maintain tenure were no longer required to publish or perish to maintain their jobs and careers? What if instead Professors were encouraged to do humanitarian work for the communities they serve in to fulfill the previous requirement of researching and writing books and articles?

Today, now at this point in the History of human thought there are many-many books; in fact there is a glut of books on all subjects. What books that are written by Professors and other experts sometimes start with a specific premise and then search for facts and information to support their original grand idea. Enough already.

Let time move on and end publish or perish. Let Professors at Universities do community service work, time permitting, working while on the clock to help alleviate poverty, address social inequalities and assist the handicapped community. If they choose let professional educators write on the big questions of life, those without specific answers, to assist those of us of ordinary intelligence and sensibilities to better understand the purpose of existence.

Once the above changes are instituted with Professors perhaps next the Profession of Politicians could be changed to make the practitioners of elected Politics less people of action and vitality in instituting and promising changes but instead to encourage thinking, ethical- philosopher type persons to enter public service as working politicians. More on this later.

Laura Nyro; the feminine mystique and creative success

Laura Nyro; the feminine mystique and creative success

fiction
edward w pritchard

Look for a woman as a prominent person in World  literature and more than likely she comes out as Laura Petrarch's muse or Dante's Beatrice. Why haven't creative women played a more memorable role on the stage of the famous personages of History?

Look no further than the career of American songwriter and singer Laura Nyro for answer to above query. Nyro creative genius and innovator flew under the radar of American success and mass popularity in the music business.

When Laura Nyro did eventually win a place in the rock and Roll hall of fame more as a song writer than popular singer it was not without controversy and rolling of eyes that she didn't deserve the honor.

Listen to Laura Nyro's rendition of the song she wrote " Stoney End". Exquisite

Today so many male and female singers of marginal talent record myriad forgettable songs. Yet they dominate the mass culture and rake in the royalties.

Give genius it's due. There's something fascinating about a creative and talented Woman. Listen to the songs written and recorded by Laura Nyro, singer, song writer, piano player. Exquisite.
